Moldova claim first win

Moldova claim first win

Late goals from Serghei Dadu and Alexandru Epureanu helped Moldova build on last week's goalless draw with Ukraine with a 2-0 win in San Marino in FIFA World Cup™ Qualifying Group H.

San Marino made life difficult for the visitors who did not break the deadlock until the 72nd minute when Dadu converted from the spot after a foul by Damiano Vannucci on Igor Picusciac.

And Moldova sealed victory three minutes later when Epureanu rose above the static San Marino defence to head their second from a corner by Vitali Bordiyan.

Picusciac almost put Moldova in front after just four minutes when his right-foot shot from the edge of the box was tipped round the post by San Marino keeper Aldo Simoncini.

Picusciac and Alexandru Gatcan had further chances for the Moldovans who stepped up the pace after the break, Picusciac again bringing a good save out of Simoncini shortly before Dadu's opener.

FIFA Partner Coca-Cola launches innovative sustainability campaign in Brazil

FIFA Partner Coca-Cola launches innovative sustainability campaign in Brazil

With the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ fast approaching, the issue of environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly prominent. As organisers of the biggest sporting competition in the world, FIFA, the LOC and all the stakeholders are committed to delivering a sustainable event in Brazil in 2014.

Recent results from FIFA’s 2012 public opinion tracker in Brazil also confirm the importance of the topic of sustainability and the environment among fans in the host country. 92 per cent of Brazilians believe that the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil should be environmentally friendly.

50 per cent of the population think that the stadiums should have facilities for recycling and proper disposal of waste. While the people of Brazil are excited about the prospect of hosting the FIFA World Cup, this research further highlights that they are also concerned about key environmental issues.

FIFA Partner Coca-Cola is making its own mark by announcing a pioneering sustainability project. Coca-Cola Brazil is to launch a campaign for the donation of plastic (PET) bottles to be reused in the linings of 6,773 seats in the new Maracanã Stadium, the venue for the final match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Around 100 collection points where people can dispose of their plastic bottles will be set up in the city of Rio by Coca-Cola Brazil ready for the launch of the campaign on 15 November (a complete list can be found on their website).

Increasing the culture of recycling is one of Coca-Cola’s objectives for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, and it’s an area that definitely seems to resonate with the people of Brazil.

Strachan: Job would be an honour

Strachan: Job would be an honour

Gordon Strachan has said it would be "an honour" to be invited to become the new manager of Scotland.

The former Celtic manager is the leading contender to replace Craig Levein, who was sacked on Monday after a poor run of results that have left Scotland's hopes of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil hanging by a thread.

Strachan was asked about the possibility of becoming Scotland manager while working as a pundit for ITV on Tuesday. He said: "It's quite simple really, it would be an honour to be asked to be the manager of your own national side, it's terrific.

"I could sit here and say 'yes, it would be great' or 'no, it's not for me' but it would also be arrogant of me to answer that if nobody has asked you and presume that someone will ask," the 55-year-old added.

"Until you've been asked a question about a job, any job, then you really don't know how you'd go about it, that's for sure. I wouldn't have the arrogance to think that someone is going to knock on my door."

Strachan enjoyed success during a four-year spell at Celtic from 2005 but has been out of management since leaving English club Middlesbrough in October 2010.

Hexagonal fixtures confirmed in CONCACAF

Hexagonal fixtures confirmed in CONCACAF

The fixtures for the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ are now set, following the Official Draw in Miami, USA on Wednesday 7 November. The final six-team group, also known as the Hexagonal, will be played over ten matchdays between February and October 2013.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s USA begin their campaign with a tricky road test in Honduras on 6 January at San Pedro Sula’s Estadio Olimpico, the very same ground where the Catrachos dismantled Canada 8-1 in their last qualifying game.

The good news for the Americans is that they avoid a midsummer trip to Mexico’s steamy Estadio Azteca. Instead, they will travel to their arch-rivals from south of the border in their third game on 26 March.

“We’ve got to go to places like Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras with the mentality that you are spot-on once you get on the field,” said Klinsmann. “I think that if the players are aware of that like they were the last two, three games, when they got the job done, then we will also qualify for Brazil in 2014.”

Reigning CONCACAF and Olympic champions Mexico, who finished the semi-final round of Brazil 2014 qualifying with a perfect record in their six games, open their Hexagonal account against Jamaica in Mexico City.

Central American giants Costa Rica meet neighbours Panama in Panama City in their first game.

“After a very exciting third round in the CONCACAF qualifiers we are very much looking forward to the last stage to begin,” said FIFA Head of World Cup and Olympic Qualifying Gordon Savic, who was on hand for the event in the US state of Florida.

The top three finishers from the final round will qualify automatically for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, while the fourth-place finisher will play off home and away against a team from the Oceania zone.

Victories excite Asian media

Victories excite Asian media

While fresh angles and differing views are usually encouraged by the media, those from Japan opted to join each other in lauding their team's performance after the 2-1 defeat of Oman on the latest matchday of Asia's final qualifying round for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

In a tense game during which the hosts threw everything forward as they sought their first win against Japan, Alberto Zaccheroni's visitors demonstrated determination and will power in overcoming the home crowd and their team. The result leaves them as the only side with an undefeated record in the campaign and well-placed to seal early qualification.

"Japan wins, on verge of reaching 2014 World Cup" was the headline of Mainichi Daily News, one of the country's oldest newspapers. The article read: "Japan leads Group B in Asian qualifying by eight points over Australia, Jordan and Oman, and is on the verge of reaching its fifth World Cup with three matches remaining."

Germany-based Hiroshi Kiyotake put Japan ahead with his first international goal after ten minutes, but having missed a couple of glorious chances, Oman equalised 13 minutes from time courtesy of Ahmed Mubarak's sublimely-taken free-kick. The Red Warriors threw everything forward in the time remaining but Shinji Okazaki settled the contest with just a minute left.

Kyodo, Japan's leading news agency, paid tribute to the prolific forward in an article entitled "Okazaki late show puts Japan on verge of World Cup berth".

The Stuttgart marksman, who is the tournament's joint top-scorer with seven goals, reflected on the memorable win while speaking to Japan Time. "I'm glad I was able to score because I didn't do much else all game," said a modest Okazaki, who had seen a header bounce just over in the first half. "We persevered and found a way to win in the end. We weren't in control today so I hope we can dominate to beat Jordan next time."

Mixed moods
While that victory cemented Japan’s dominance in Group B, struggling Iraq could let out a sigh of relief with a 1-0 win against Jordan for their first triumph of the campaign. The single goal by teenage striker Hammadi Ahmed proved valuable for Zico’s side, who moved level with both Australia and Oman on five points behind Japan.

"The Jordan win has reignited our qualifying hopes," announced Aswat al Iraq, an independent news agency in the country. Daily Arabic-English newspaper Azzaman, meanwhile, stated: "A lone goal gives Iraq a precious win against Jordan on the road to Brazil".

In Group A, Uzbekistan stunned hosts Iran 1-0 to move into the section lead. The feat earned praise from national news agency UzA, who dubbed it as "a crucial victory" on the road to Brazil 2014.

Also joining them in celebratory mood was Qatar's Al Jazeera, who said their one-goal home win against Lebanon leaves "Qatar World Cup hopes still burning".

As the winners’ gain is the losers’ pain, Lebanon daily Assafir was left to rue their "diminishing hopes", while Al Akhbar remained philosophical by predicting the potential "end of a campaign" to be "a start of a new era".

Chile coach Borghi sacked after Serbia defeat

Chile coach Borghi sacked after Serbia defeat

Chilean national coach Claudio Borghi was sacked on Wednesday following his side's 3-1 defeat to Serbia in St Gallen.

The 48-year-old Argentinian - who replaced compatriot Marcelo Bielsa in February last year - paid the price for a slump in form that has seen Chile lose three successive 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualifiers and slump to sixth in the standings.

"The record isn't good after the last four matches we have played and a few minutes ago I met a couple of the federation's directors who asked me to step down," said Borghi.

"I have already announced the news to the players. They (the directors) asked me to go, I have been sacked and I have not resigned.

"This closes a really nice chapter in my life, and I am really proud to have been the coach of Chile."

Despite their loss of form Chile only trail fourth and fifth placed Venezuela and Uruguay by virtue of a worse goal difference with seven matches remaining.

The first four earn an automatic place at the finals in Brazil while the fifth placed team go into a play-off.

Prandelli: De Rossi punishment will serve him well

Prandelli: De Rossi punishment will serve him well

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said on Monday that his dropping of experienced midfielder Daniele De Rossi for Wednesday's friendly with France for being sent off at the weekend would teach him a lesson.

The AS Roma star, 29, was punished by Prandelli for punching Lazio captain Stefano Mauri in the face during the Rome derby on Sunday, which Lazio won 3-2.

"This punishment will help him not to repeat such errors at the World Cup," said Prandelli. "I have no anxiety regarding De Rossi with regard to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil."

De Rossi, who will miss the next three Serie A games because of the resulting suspension handed down by the disciplinary commission, has been in hot water before.

He was banned for four games during the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ finals for elbowing USA striker Brian McBride, but he was able to return for the final, which the Italians won in a penalty shootout over France.

"He [De Rossi] is too committed," said Prandelli. "When you put too much responsibility on yourself you lose your head. He must find a balance."

Hodgson: Rain delay affected players

Hodgson: Rain delay affected players

England boss Roy Hodgson feared his team had lost some of their spark during the 24-hour delay to their FIFA World Cup™ qualifier with Poland. The Three Lions left Warsaw grateful for a point after a 1-1 draw.

Wayne Rooney put the visitors in front and missed a glorious chance to double that lead, but Poland were good value for their draw in the end and could easily have had more to show for their efforts than a Kamil Glik equaliser that came after a mistake from Joe Hart.

Hodgson accepted neither side benefited from the postponement caused by Tuesday's deluge. But he certainly felt it affected his players.

"On Monday, after the training session on the pitch, the players were looking very sharp and lively," he said. "I didn't get that impression today. I don't want to give the impression we were hard done by and our opponents weren't.

"But if a game is postponed it is a little bit easier if you are on home soil," he added. "We had that extra day and night in the hotel."

Hodgson labelled the pitch as "dead", which may have contributed to some uncharacteristically sloppy passing, with Michael Carrick among those most affected. "There was no question the pitch was playable but it wasn't suited to quick passing," he said. "Both teams made quite a few passing mistakes. At half-time we were quite surprised how many passes we had sent astray."

The positive, which cannot be dismissed, is that England did not lose and, that UEFA EURO 2012 penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy excepted, remain unbeaten during Hodgson's 11 games in charge.

Their advantage in Group H is almost certain to have have disappeared by the time they next play again in March as second-placed Montenegro, who are just a point behind, face minnows San Marino next month. However, England's durability is something Hodgson is convinced will stand them in good stead.

"When you are in a qualifying group, or you are with a league club, there are days when things don't always go your way," he said. "On those days it is very important you still come away with a result.

"We would have loved to have won it but we didn't produce good enough football to do that," he added. "But we did do enough to avoid defeat and go away with a point."

So many of England's players failed to perform. Rooney was the most obvious example, despite his 32nd England goal, and following his failure to snaffle a chance provided by Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck, it was no surprise he was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

"A bit of both," was Hodgson's response when asked whether the reasoning behind his decision was physical or tactical. "There was an element of physicality because it looked as though he was tiring.

"He couldn't reproduce his excellent performance against San Marino and we wanted to get a little bit more life and energy into the central area, which [Tom] Cleverley was capable of giving us alongside [Steven] Gerrard and Carrick, so Wayne moved wider. Then, when we thought he was tiring we felt it was the right moment to bring on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who gave us some fresh legs."

Hodgson believed that move worked, although Poland looked equally likely to snatch a win at the death.

Premier League: QPR 1 Southampton 3

QPR remain bottom of the table after a 3-1 home defeat against Southampton on Saturday.

Goals from Rickie Lambert, Jason Puncheon and an own goal from Anton Ferdinand consigned the winless Londoners to their third loss of the season at Loftus Road.

An impressive first 45 minutes from the Saints left QPR chasing a two-goal deficit going into the second half, as a header from Lambert and a sweet strike from Puncheon left QPR in a sorry state at half-time.

They were unable to mount a comeback in the second half, despite an early goal from Junior Hoilett, as Southampton continued to cause the Londoners more problems and an own goal from Ferdinand ended their hopes of picking up a first Premier League win of the season.

Southampton started with the better of the action with two chances in the first 10 minutes, Lallana first blazing over after a lovely move and, just minutes later, an in-swinging cross from Puncheon found its way on to the post.

Twenty minutes in and, following slack defensive play from QPR, another chance fell QPR’s way. From a corner, Lambert was left unmarked at the back post but the 30-year-old was unable to direct his header past Julio Cesar as the Brazilian tipped it wide.

From the ensuing corner, however, Southampton found the breakthrough. QPR were unable to clear their lines and the ball found its way to Cork in the area – a shot from the midfielder was skewed wide but Puncheon was at the back post for what seemed like a routine tap-in.

However, Jose Bosingwa thwarted the winger with a goalline clearance but, atoning for his earlier miss, Lambert was there to head home the rebound.

With the end of the first half already in sight, Puncheon added to QPR’s dismay when, following excellent work from Nathaniel Clyne down the right and finding himself with time to spare on the edge of the area, the winger fired home.

QPR started the second half strongly as Djibril Cisse forced a good save from Gazzaniga following a Taarabt cross.

It was just minutes later before another excellent Taarabt cross forced QPR back into the game; Taarabt picking up the ball on the left wing and delivering a dangerous inswinger. It proved too dangerous for Gazzaniga as he came and found himself nowhere near the ball, leaving Hoilett with a simple header.

Following the goal, Southampton asserted themselves on the game once more as QPR’s defence looked susceptible.

With Hughes’ side struggling to trouble the away side, Yoshida forced a great save from Cesar in the 75th minute, following yet another troublesome corner.

Their dominance paid off in the 82nd minute as a short corner caught QPR unawares, resulting in a low ball across the penalty area that Ferdinand could only divert into his own goal.

Premier League: Liverpool 3 Wigan 0

Liverpool produced a dazzling second-half display to beat Wigan 3-0 at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, with Luis Suarez netting a brace.

The hosts broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half, with Suarez grabbing his ninth league goal of the campaign, and he scored his 10th just 11 minutes later after a superb ball from Jose Enrique.

It was Enrique’s turn to get on the scoresheet in the 65th minute as Liverpool scored their first win since a 1-0 Premier League triumph over Reading a month ago.

The hosts started the brighter of the two teams and Enrique, in a more advanced role, dragged an effort just wide from the edge of the area, while Daniel Agger went close shortly afterwards, nodding past the post from a Steven Gerrard corner.

Moments before half-time, a flowing move involving Gerrard and Suarez down the right saw the latter drill in an excellent cross which Enrique just failed to turn home, with Ali Al-Habsi getting a strong palm on the ball to keep it out and the two sides went in at the break level.

Liverpool raced out of the blocks in the second half though, and took the lead in the 46th minute through Suarez. Raheem Sterling latched on to a poor Jean Beausejour pass before rounding Maynor Figueroa at pace and breaking into the box, cutting the ball back for the forward to lash home into the top corner unmarked to hand his side the lead.

With Rodgers’ side dominating possession, they doubled their advantage in the 57th minute with Suarez once again grabbing the goal, after coolly slotting home when put through one-on-one by a magnificent pass from Enrique.

They made it 3-0 in the 65th minute with Enrique capping another lively performance in an unfamiliar role on the wing by tapping home into an empty net after Al-Habsi palmed out a Sterling shot.

The hosts should have made it four minutes later when Jordan Henderson, on as a substitute for Suso, blazed over a volley at the back post when put through by a delicate Suarez pass over the top.

By this point it was simply a matter of damage limitation for Roberto Martinez’s side and Glen Johnson almost extended Liverpool’s lead to four, but his drive from the edge of the box after a mazy run was pulled just wide of the bottom left-hand corner.

Despite flooding forward in search of another, Liverpool were unable to add to their tally on an afternoon full of promising performances and energetic attacking play.

Pienaar confident Fellaini will continue at Everton

Steven Pienaar is adamant that team-mate Marouane Fellaini Everton will not leave in the coming January transfer window.

The 25-year-old joined the Toffees from standard Liege in 2008 for a club record fee of 15 million pounds and has since established himself as a fan favourite at Goodison Park.

Felliani has scored eight goals in 15 games this season and associated with a big-money move away from Merseyside.

Pienaar believes, however, that his Belgian team mate remains outside the emerging window.

"He's enjoying his game at the moment so I don't think he'll want to disrupt progress," said Pienaar.

"He is smart enough not to go.

"I don't think he will go in January. I'm sure the manager will keep him.

"There is much speculation about but he is still contracted to the club, and if we keep going like this, we know that it might be hard to keep up are still keeping him in the future – but who knows? He is very important for us in recent weeks. "

However, the South Africa International stopped briefly Fellaini never time on his spell at Goodison would call, and stated that he would not criticise him if he chose to go.

Pienaar continued: "he is a mature man and everyone makes his own decisions. You must make decisions that risks in life.

"If you're afraid to get out of bed and take a risk, you don't enjoy life. I think if the opportunity comes for him eventually and he takes it that we will wish him all the best, but I certainly don't think it will be in January. "
