Poland earn point against England

Poland failed to pull off an historic win over England on Wednesday, a day after their FIFA World Cup™ qualifier had to be rescheduled due to a waterlogged pitch, but for home fans the 1-1 draw had a taste of victory.

Wayne Rooney sent the Poles' morale sinking 15 minutes from half-time, heading in a corner from Steven Gerrard for his 30th goal in an England shirt. Poland's answer came in the 70th minute, thanks to Torino defender Kamil Glik, courtesy of another header from a corner.

Conscious of their underdog image, they stand 54th in the FIFA rankings to England's fifth, Poland took the game to their rivals from kick off.

The game had been billed as a personal battle between Poland's Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski and England's Manchester City keeper Joe Hart, who recently did battle in the UEFA Champions League.

But with Lewandowski failing to shine in the half, it was midfielder Kamil Grosicki who first sent home fans' pulses racing in the 58,000-capacity Kazimierz Gorski Stadium in the eighth minute, though poor control stymied his effort.

England had their chance after 15 minutes but James Milner's lateral pass failed to find a team-mate before Polish goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton smothered the ball.

Working hand-in-hand with fellow midfielder, French-born Ludovic Obraniak, Sivasspor's Grosicki continued to seek weak links in the England defence, to no avail.

Manchester City's Milner fed Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe up front in the 26th minute, only for the latter to lose the battle with Poland captain Marcin Wasilewski, standing in for the injured Kuba Blaszczykowski.

Two minutes later, Poland powered back, with Grosicki finding Lewandowski in the box, only for newcomer Pawel Wszolek to fail to latch onto the pass.

A minute after Rooney's goal put England up, Grosicki again came up empty.

For the remainder of the half, both teams failed to capitalise on corners and free kicks, while strikes from Glen Johnson and Grosicki went wide minutes from the whistle.

After the interval, Poland upped the pace in a drive to close the deficit, with corner-taking stalwart Obraniak firing over the bar in the 49th minute, followed by Lewandowski ten minutes later.

A lone run by substitute Danny Welbeck then found Tyton floundering, but Rooney failed to make it two.

Poland's traditionally unforgiving fans began to harangue their team, but were suddenly silenced when a 70th-minute Obraniak corner found Glik, who earned his second Poland goal, as Hart came for the ball and was left stranded.

Ten minutes later, they were inches away from pulling ahead, as yet another Obraniak corner found Glik.

Three minutes from time, Milner found himself free, only for Tyton to beat him, before Obraniak pounded at Hart twice, the second time forcing the England keeper into a lunging save.

The Poles had been aware that history was against them having beaten England just once, in the race to qualify for the 1974 FIFA World Cup, when they deprived the English of a berth at the finals, and drawn six times in a total of 17 previous meetings.

Hodgson: England ready to fight for qualification

Roy Hodgson is not concerned about his England team finding themselves in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ qualification dogfight.

Wednesday's draw in Poland means the Three Lions will lose their narrow advantage in Group H should Montenegro, as expected, win their game in hand against San Marino in November.

Having already dropped two points against Ukraine at Wembley last month, few now believe England will be able to simply cruise towards the finals in Brazil in 2014.

Indeed, should they lose to Montenegro on 26 March in their only meaningful qualifier before next autumn, there will be a huge question mark over England's presence in South America.

However, Hodgson is confident his players have the character to meet such challenges - and may even be better for it.

"If it's a dogfight, it's a dogfight. There's nothing wrong with that," he said. "The good thing is we know we can stay and take part in a dogfight.

"We took part in a few dogfights during the Euros and we certainly dug in against Poland and showed the right sort of character and determination. "There will be some groups where one team shoots away and others where it's going to be quite close and I still think we will improve.

"But I think you'll find that come November we'll be very much in the mix. And if sometimes you've got to fight your way for something, rather than just sail through, that can help.

"Russia and Holland sailed through to the Euros but neither of them got out of their groups. Italy went there with loads of problems, we were led to believe, not least politically - and ended up in the final."

In fairness to Hodgson, his side have continually shown their battling qualities, and did so again in Warsaw to emerge with a point when they could easily have been beaten.

What they lack, and have done throughout his 11 games in charge, is a touch of class.

Cohesion must also be an issue when you have used 34 players in the space of five months, 25 of them more than once. "It is a lot," said Hodgson. "But it wouldn't be a fair criticism to say we've chopped and changed around.

"It's more a case of looking at several players to see if they can start to worry some of those who are up in 80 or 90 caps. And I think we are quite close to bedding a team down."

There is some truth to Hodgson's words, but in other ways he is miles off.

Italy's UEFA EURO 2012 qualification record was eight wins and two draws from 10 games - Spain won all eight matches and all 10 on the road to South Africa 2010 - so there is a correlation between qualifying form and tournament performance.

More pertinently, the age-old question of how to get the best out of Wayne Rooney remains.

In addition, the absence of a physical driving force in midfield was apparent until Tom Cleverley was switched inside, whilst the loss of John Terry has created a massive hole at the back.

Impending returns from injury for Jack Wilshere, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are awaited with anticipation. On top form, all three would be very useful additions.

As it presently stands though, their ability has to be taken on trust and in Wilshere's case in particular, after 16 months out, he has to prove himself all over again.

There is time though, before that trip to Podgorica, where England lost a two-goal lead and Wayne Rooney lost his head 12 months ago, and Hodgson needs to use it wisely. The alternative is too grim to contemplate.

"It would be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs if I was to stand up in front of the players and tell them what they might be missing," said Hodgson. "They would regard that as slightly insulting.

"There's a lot of football still to be played and the bottom line is that this is not an easy group. It would have been lovely to have got off to a flyer and be sitting here with 12 points.

"But you don't get what you want by asking for it. You get what you want by playing for it. Ukraine played very well at Wembley and deserved their point. Poland played well and deserved their point.

"If you'd said to me at the start, given the circumstances, that we'd have eight points and be unbeaten at this point, I'd have been happy to accept it."

England to play Brazil and Ireland in 2013

England will play friendlies against Brazil and the Republic of Ireland in 2013 as a way of launching the Football Association's 150th anniversary, the national governing body announced on Wednesday.

Five-time FIFA World Cup™ winners Brazil will visit Wembley in February as part of a two-match arrangement that sees England heading to South America for a brief tour in June.

Prior to that trip, England will play the Republic of Ireland, also at Wembley, for the first time since their infamous fixture in 1995 was abandoned after a riot by England fans at Dublin's Lansdowne Road.

Brazil are always a big draw card and the 6 February clash is given added relevance by the fact the South Americans, beaten finalists in the recent men's Olympic Final in London, are staging the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile officials will hope for a big crowd for what will be the Republic's first match at Wembley since 1991, with travelling fans only having to make a relatively short journey and a large expatriate community already in London.

News of these fixtures come after the FA announced their 150th anniversary would also feature a match in August between England and Scotland -- international football's oldest clash.

Club England managing director Adrian Bevington said: "We're delighted Brazil will kick-off the FA's 150th anniversary celebrations at Wembley.

"2013 is a landmark year for The FA and an exciting England fixture programme in addition to Wembley hosting the UEFA Champions League Final will form a key part of the celebrations.

"As the most successful footballing nation, with great players and supporters, it will be fantastic to launch this important year in English football's history against such outstanding opponents as Brazil.

"We also look forward to hosting Republic of Ireland and Scotland at Wembley next year. These matches are sure to evoke great passion among supporters."

Meanwhile Bevington added the matches in South America would form a part of England's plans for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, a tournament for which they have still to qualify.

"We have been planning the fixtures in Brazil for over a year, as a key part of our preparation for 2014, subject to qualification," he said.

"Our players do not have any experience of playing in South America and it will undoubtedly be beneficial for the team to travel and play in Brazil, a year ahead of the World Cup. We negotiated our qualifying schedule with a specific view to allowing this.

"While in Brazil, The FA and England squad will play an active role in developing and supporting a charity programme both in advance of and during the summer of 2013 and 2014."

Steven Gerrard was sent off as Frank Lampard's 86th-minute penalty spared England's blushes in a 1-1 draw with Ukraine at Wembley.

Gerrard was red-carded two minutes from the end of a poor display from Roy Hodgson's men in their FIFA World Cup™ qualifier. The hosts were saved when Yevhen Khacherdi blocked Danny Welbeck's flick with his arm, allowing Lampard to drive home from the spot to earn England a point.

Gerrard's dismissal followed shortly afterwards for a second yellow card. The Liverpool man becomes the 14th England player to be sent off, although the damage is not too bad as he only misses the visit of San Marino next month.

Ukraine will be cursing a missed opportunity, though. Oleg Blokhin's men came agonisingly close to what would have been a deserved victory. In Yevhen Konoplyanka, they had not only the game's star performer but also scorer of a goal worthy of winning any match.

And, while defeat was avoided, clearly there is so much work ahead of Hodgson and his team if they are to reach Brazil 2014. It had not gone unnoticed that the last time England went into a competitive game with John Terry, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand all missing from their starting line-up was against Croatia almost five years ago.

That miserable night was the last time England had lost a qualifying match on home soil. It was a record that soon became obvious was going to be tested. Only three minutes had elapsed when Oleg Gusev's cross flicked off Leighton Baines, dipped over Joe Hart and clipped the outside of a post.

Joleon Lescott cleared another Gusev cross, then Roman Zozulia failed to capitalise on Konoplyanka's neat approach work. During those dodgy opening minutes, England's passing was awful, costing them a chance to build up any momentum.

Five-goal winners in Moldova on Friday and third-ranked team in the world, but any sense of superiority was shaken out of England by spirited opponents. Andriy Shevchenko's retirement, far from weakening the team, created a greater bond, which new captain Anatoliy Tymoschuk marshalled around the field in impressive fashion.

It might have been different had Jermain Defoe's thunderous effort not been ruled out. Defoe's disbelief was obvious. Yet it was also beyond doubt he had shoved a textbook rugby hand-off into the neck of Andriy Yarmolenko.

Gerrard was trying to inspire, like a good captain should. Clearing a goalbound Ruslan Rotan effort at one end, driving a pass through for Defoe at the other, the striker's flick almost releasing James Milner.

It was the prelude to Tom Cleverley's succession of glaring misses. Defoe showed admirable unselfishness when he opted to steer Gerrard's cross back into the six-yard box rather than go for goal himself from an acute angle. Cleverley raced in, looking certain to gobble up the chance with only Andriy Pyatov to beat.

Unfortunately, the Manchester United man fired straight at the Ukraine goalkeeper, whose reactions were up to the task. Cleverley then flicked Lampard's pass well wide from a good position, before lifting the ball against the outside of a post from Milner's pass.

Konoplyanka stuns Wembley
Amid the personal anguish, Ukraine had seized the initiative. After Denys Garmash had let England off the hook by heading over when he crept into space to meet Yevhen Selin's cross, Konoplyanka showed them no mercy. Stepping inside Gerrard, the highly-rated midfielder sent a 25-yard effort curling over Hart and into the top corner.

In a second-half littered with yellow cards, six of them for England including Gerrard's double caution, Baines needed to make a timely intervention to prevent Zozulia reaching Konoplyanka's cross.

Glen Johnson, among those to get booked after the break, went close at the other end but the introductions of Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge were inevitable given how the game was panning out.

The decision to replace Baines with Ryan Bertrand was less obvious, especially as young duo Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana both offered more attacking invention from the bench for all their inexperience. Welbeck almost profited from Sturridge's cross nine minutes from time, but prodded against a post.

Redemption came shortly afterwards, with Lampard converting from the spot, just as he did in Chisinau on Friday. But the outcome will fool no one, least of all Hodgson, into thinking that England really do deserve to be rated as highly as they are currently.
